Art 211W - Entry 3

Woah! An Apple and Microsoft product working together!

This video/article discusses a homebrew application for the iPhone that interacts with the Microsoft Surface "table computer". The basis for creating such an application was the inspiration from the “SecondLight” technology shown at last year’s Professional Developers Conference. This was an expansion of their original Surface technology to allow a second, “hidden” image to be viewable by simply placing tracing paper over top.

For the owners of the first generation device, though, another alternative was required. Enter XRay. This project takes advantage of a secondary display that can be placed over top of the device, and then having screen images “sent” to it to reflect whatever was underneath.

The possibilities for technology like this are completely endless. The “hidden image” concept can be taken to a completely different level. Imagine seeing an image and being able to see an expanded description by simply holding your phone over it. Another fun concept would be the digital map idea we completed last week. Having a slur of names on a Surface, only being able to hold another device on top to see details for each individual.

These “hidden” displays are a completely new way to provide information, and should be seen more and more often as time progresses.

  1. Integrating technologies is fascinating. The idea that one device can be useless without another, but when put together they spawn a useful or sometimes just humorous outcome is wonderful. This iPhone application allows a person to lay their phone down onto a surface and the phone depicts whatever is shown to be duplicated on the phones screen as a sketch. Simple, yet complex in that imagine the relation someone must of had with the application process to create such a simple, yet fun, experience. The "hidden" image construct here can be a vague and stand our appearance, as you see a sort of "hidden" sketched image as you lay down the phone. Also you realize that everything can be modded or distorted thanks to technologies. This is the hidden "hidden" image. That anything can be potentially created, given the technology.

  2. I completed a gigantic project sophomore year on the advancement and implementation of the Microsoft Surface into daily lifestyle. The ability to have an interactive tabletop that sends and receives data based on the premise it's programmed for (casinos, hotels, restaurants) using nodes and objects of interest is, well, quite breathtaking. For example, I remember researching the basic setup for a restaurant; bottles of wine have object indicators on them, so when they are placed onto the table, a giant array of information appears and the user can sift through it using their hands. Paying with a credit card? Place it down on the table, and the transaction can be completed directly in front of you. Menus would even be available on the network. The amount of time spent researching and developing seems like it's being put to good use.

The integration of products, electronics, and so forth mixed with the Surface premise has a ton of possibilities. The interconnectivity is really quite fascinating, and with time and research, can really be put to good use in areas where the Surface has the potential to streamline many electronic processes.

  3. I think that this is a very interesting and useful development. I like where Jason was going with being able to display information about images on the Surface through the Iphone. I can only imagine how useful this would be in a Wikipedia type application, where you could get a definition of a new word simply by placing your phone on top of it.

  4. This post is really interesting to me for a couple of reasons. I really enjoy the software being used to develop an X-ray line drawing of images on another computer screen. I agree that there are a lot of interesting things you can do with this technology including investigative use for detectives and police forces. Also being able to expand the image and make a clear enlarged version of the outline is really interesting. It is a shame you need two pieces of really expensive equipment for this software to work.
The other reason why I am excited about this technology is that it shows the Microsoft and Apple technologies can work together well. Nothing frustrates me more than when certain programs are only developed for one form of operating system and not given support for the other operating system. Being able to use the two operating systems together is such a benefit since both technologies have advantages over the other system.

  5. There always seems to be new ways in which the world of technology is incorporating different devices to work together. This is truly an awesome idea, with obvious endless options. However, something like this would require the user to have both systems in order to use this technology. Could this possibly also be used as a method to control the consumer. In order to use one you would have to have both. I do think it's funny that Microsoft and Apple would work together considering the ongoing battle between Mac and PC.

  6. I can imagine seeing an image and being able to see an expanded description by holding my phone over it. I myself have taught about a similar idea but I think my idea is much better and can be used in different areas. My idea involve the use of GPS and being able to take a picture with your phone and through GPS you get a description of the picture depending on the area where you took the picture. Now I belong to this group/company and we are working on some ideas and I can’t really reveal the whole technology but we hope come out soon. We are young and it looks like we have some great ideas.
